Obituary for Pamela Ancowitz

Ancowitz, Pamela (Stone) Died peacefully on August 7, 2023, in Pearl River, New York. She was 79 years old. Pamela was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 23, 1944. She is the mother of Joshua Stone, Joseph Ancowitz, the late Jesse Stone, and the grandmother of Santino Stone. She is survived by her partner Richard Benfield, her sister Betsy Webb and her brother Randall Stone. In 1968, she was an active participant in the Mark Rudd protests against the Vietnam War and other issues at Columbia University. She lived in Mamaroneck, New York, for most of her adult life where she raised her children with her ex-husband Robert Ancowitz. She was the director of Parents Place, a non-profit organization in White Plains, New York, where low-income parents could bring their toddlers and newborns for play, parental guidance, and a sense of community. Her dogged leadership kept the organization running for many years. In 2011, after meeting Richard Benfield, she moved to Piermont, in Rockland County, where she became active in VCS of New City, a volunteer counseling organization where she guided women and men from various walks of life. She was particularly passionate about counseling and helping transgender youth. She was an ardent runner and yoga enthusiast. Services will be private. Contributions may be given in her name to Planned Parenthood or the Alzheimer’s Association.
