Sr. John Terrance, as she was known then, was in charge of the candy that was sold in the afternoon during class. Teachers would send someone to pick up boxes of candy, sell it each day, and return the money to her once it was all sold. Can you imagine teachers today selling candy in class!!!! Anyway, what I remember most was bringing the candy money every week to her classroom. My first grade teacher, Sr. Michaela, knew that I was related to Sr. John Terrance and assigned me the job of bringing the candy money upstairs to the fifth floor classroom every week. Now keep in mind, my sister Margie was a student in her class and hated when I came up because she knew the questions would come about my family and how we were all doing. Questions like - were we listening to our parents, did we do our homework, who got into trouble this week. All sorts of questions about our cousins (who also attended Holy Spirit) and Aunts and Uncles, neighbors, and if I gave money to the missions instead of buying candy. Of course I would blab everything to her which embarrassed my sister. Anyway, in the end we always ended our chats with her giving me a couple of pieces of candy. I never forgot that even though I was only 6 years old.....rest in peace Sr.
