Obituary for John G. Cunningham

John G. Cunningham was born on January 26, 1931 in Nyack, New York to Hattie (Downey) and Noel Cunningham. He departed this life surrounded by his loving family, at his home in Nyack, New York on September 30th..

John was born and raised in Piermont NY where he attended the local public schools. In 1948 he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. He was employed for many years by the Flintkote Company before he began his employment with Orange & Rockland Utilities. At Orange & Rockland Utilities, John worked as a General Operation Supervisor, until his retirement in 1992.

John loved his family, sports and his trips to the casino. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a wonderful brother, dedicated grandfather, influential uncle, and a fantastic friend. Affectionately called “Mr. C.”, John devoted his time and talents to the St. Charles AME Zion Church for over 35 years. He was a committed member of the Trustee Board, where he served as the church treasurer. He also was the president of the Sons’ of Varick, a member of the Culinary Committee, and the Male Chorus. The St. Charles AME Zion Church will miss his thundering voice, kind heart, and generous spirit.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sons Darryl and Bruce; two brothers, Noel Jr., Kenneth; and one sister, Doris.

John leaves to cherish his loving memory, his wife of 55 years, Vertelia; three daughters
Dawn Bess (Darryl), Largo, MD., Stacie Brooks (Oxford, NC), Eleda House (Hezekiah) Englewood, NJ.; eight grandchildren, Sean Cunningham, Whitney Goburn, Drew Cunningham, Bruce Cunningham, Katrice Cunningham, Karrington Brooks, Joshua House and Madison House; and five great-children. He is also survived by two sisters Ida Greene, Gail Martin; his sister-in-law, Mary W. Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visiting will be Monday from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc.
A private funeral service will be held.
